Preppy men's fashion, in contrast, wore Izod shirts with a popped collar, dress pants, and penny loafer shoes with the ever-present baggy blazer with the sleeves rolled up. Ever seen Pretty in Pink? Blaine is the perfect example of the preppy male of the 80's.
Accessories were big and gaudy. Necklaces had large pendants and medallions and were piled on in layers. Earrings were long and dangly. Purse sizes were taken to both extremes with no medium--it was either extremely tiny or unnecessarily massive.

Hairstyles for both women and men could be described with three simple words: long, wide, and tall. Basically, blow dry it out, use lots of hairsprays, and you were good to go!

Fashion icons of this era were Madonna for girls and Michael Jackson for boys, and everyone was clamoring to look just like them--and they could, it was the 80's after all.

As the 90's drew closer, fashion mellowed out a lot. Hair got flatter and more tamed and colors dimmed to more subtle hues. However, eighties fashion has endured as a piece of nostalgia and some pieces of it are coming back today--including leggings (in more neutral colors), over sized sweatshirts, and skinny jeans. However, some things are better left in the past: namely, the neon colors, leg warmers, and shoulder pads.
